"Thankful" Excerpts: #1

“You wanted to speak with me?”

“Yes, my son. I do. Or rather, I should say, we do.” His mother pointed to Stefan who leaned against the wall, his unreadable expression giving nothing away. To her left, stood Benji and Leo. Jacques was seated at the table, his expression grim.

“I feel like I'm being hunted,” Donil joked, though his stance changed as tension ran through him. They were ganging up on him. He didn't care what they said, he had already made up his mind.

“Not hunted, but this is important, my son.”

His mother gave him the look and he frowned. He wasn't in the mood for a lecture.

“Don't get your fur riled,” Leo interjected, his gaze focused on Donil. “You've got that look on your face that always means trouble for me.”

“If it bothers you so much, then you can leave,” Donil retorted. Yep, they were definitely closing ranks around him. He was not going to allow them to corner him. He was an Alpha and he needed to do what was best for his clan and mate.

“No need to be rude,” Benji chided before he and Leo exchanged a glance. “Listen, we understand you want to protect Laylah, but you can't abandon the Resistance. Everyone who has joined did so because of you, Donil. You are the leader, even though you claim not to be.”

“I didn't ask for the role of leader. I simply wanted to save my mate.”

“And we did, with the Resistance's help. How do you think they will view you if you turn tail and run?” Jacques demanded.

Donil glared at the older wolf. “I'm not turning tail. I want to take Laylah to safety. If that means leaving everything else behind to do so, then that is a sacrifice I'm willing to make.”

“Pull your head out your ass, Pup.”

Donil turned and glared at Stefan. The older man's condescending tone pissed him off. “My head is where it should be,” he growled.

“Really? Could have fooled me. Oh, wait, maybe you already did that when you took control of the Resistance and led this fight. You keep whining that you're an Alpha and that you get no respect. Your behavior before and now will guarantee that you will never get respect or get help again. Man up and do the right thing. Besides, I don't think my niece would agree with your decision to stuff her into some hiding hole.”

“What did you just say?” Donil stalked toward Stefan, ignoring the rising tension. “Leave Laylah out of this!”

“Can't do that, Alpha. She is a grown woman and capable of making her own decisions. She is very much a part of this. And, I know my niece. She wouldn't want all the blood, sweat, tears and lives that were given to be thrown callously aside because of your misplaced protective urges.”

“She is my mate and I will do what I want to protect her!” Donil's temper snapped and he lunged at Stefan. How dare the wolf question his decisions!

Stefan smirked and came toward him, the air humming with the wolf's anticipation of a fight.
