"Thankful" Excerpts: #2

He was still in shock at the news about her pregnancy. He had suspected at one point she might be but, when she'd gotten sick, he figured he had gotten it wrong. He tried to remember if there were some other signs he might have missed. None came to mind."Laylah," he said her name softly and waited for her to respond. When she didn't speak he tried again. "Laylah, please answer me. I need to know if you're okay.""Miguel?"The faintness of her voice worried him. she sounded weaker than before. "My lady, how are you feeling?""I hurt everywhere. Miguel, I'm so sorry that I couldn't tell the truth. I'm such a weakling! I'm so sorry! I don't think I can say it enough. I couldn't even protect you and Roberto." She abruptly stopped speaking and the sound of her crying reached his ears.Miguel's heart clenched and he wanted to hit something. Her tears always undid him. It was the one thing that could make him see red. This is why he hated his Alpha so much. The man had no empathy whatsoever and it caused nothing but sorrow and pain.He desperately wanted to hold her in his arms but that wasn't a possibility. So he did the next best thing.::Laylah?::Her mental recoil was like a slap to the face. The stench of fear assaulted his nose and he cursed. He shouldn't have reached for her telepathically, especially since Yon had made liberal use of the Alpha call to punish her."My Lady, I'm sorry! I did not mean to scare you. I will not touch your mind again." Her fear receded a little and he relaxed. Talking he could do. Whatever it took to calm her he would do.He carefully rolled to his side and slowly sat up, his broken ribs protesting the movement. "Have you thought of names yet?"Surprise rippled along the bond he had with her. He felt a prick of guilt. If she knew, would she be okay with it? Or would she completely reject him? Shoving that thought aside, he focused on her."No. I...I hadn't thought that far ahead. I only wanted to get away from him. Now it's too late and he's going to take my baby," she whimpered. "I don't want that!" she wailed."My Lady! Don't panic. Your friends and family WILL come and save us. They won't let us stay locked up here at Alpha Yon's mercy.""I want to go home. I want this nightmare to be over. I want....,"Miguel closed his eyes, her words piercing him. When she said home did she mean back to that Panther Alpha and the other Weres who followed him? A frustrated growl escaped his lips. He didn't want to lose her to them. None of them were worthy of her. Hell, they had let her be given to his cruel Alpha to begin with. None of them were even capable of protecting her. They couldn't even do a proper rescue. He resented that group of people. Miguel gently thumped his head against the wall. He knew what his problem was. He was jealous of the bonds she had with her friends and family. If she went back to them, what would happen to Roberto and himself? Laylah meant the world to him and so did her happiness. He was man enough to recognize that he was only a Beta and really couldn't compete with an Alpha in terms of power or riches. He really didn't get what she saw in that Panther Alpha. Though he was the same age as Silentshadow, Miguel was fairly certain that he had a few more redeeming qualities than his rival. He couldn't make a dent in their bond and Laylah only saw him as a good friend. He wanted, no, desired more with her."Arrgh," he muttered. He shouldn't be thinking such thoughts at this moment. He needed to find a way to get them out of this prison before Yon made it their graves and locked Laylah away forever.Belatedly Miguel realized that Laylah had fallen quiet again but her even breathing reassured him that she was only sleeping. He opened his eyes. Glancing in her direction, he could dimly make out her prone frame. Her back was to him and that was fine. She must be worn out from crying, he thought, not happy that it was the only way she could fall asleep. Stress wasn't good for the baby and unless something was done, things could go wrong. He closed his eyes again. He needed to rest and think. Time was against him but by the cosmos, he would be her savior this time. With that firm resolve in mind, he drifted off to sleep.
